Pump It Up: Episode 1:

The King and I

“Here ye, here ye! All who dwell in the domain of Lord Jamal Usurper King. Today is the day of the prestigious Basket Brawl Tournament! Noeth blood noeth foul, deux un deux via the half court, maketh yee taketh yee, these are the rules of thy game. All who dare enter sign thy waiver and enter thy arena!”

These were the words the referee said unto the crowd

A cruel game none other than the King could have imagined

To winner goeth the spoils but the vanquished doomed to a life of labor in the prisons

Any man who dare enter this challenge surely had nothing left to lose

They’d be a fool to think the King honor his word

Such were the words I said to myself as I signed my name on the dotted line

I was one of these men yes but the riches were not my goal

I had my sights on another prize

The spectators gathered around the Blackest Top as the cage lowered

The top coiled with razor wire, through its chain links weapons dangled

The cage was to make sure no man left until a victor was crowned

Many matches had now gone by and they were brutal as expected

There was no skill to be had amongst the most of them

Just hooligans with ample size

Crushing their opponents with injuries as to win by default

My turn was next now and I was against one of these very men

The Tooth they called him

His name given by the very thing he took from his opponents

Though dangerous

He was just like all the other vagrants who entered this tournament

All brawn and no brain

It was a hard fought match, one in which I nearly lost my head

But my skills proved true

This same pattern of victory was repeated until at last

I was the last baller left

My final opponent, the King himself

My heart sank to the depths of my soul fore I knew victory was impossible

I had only one chance

A great power of the tongue I possessed

But this sword of jest had to be used with expertise

Fore the wrong stroke meant my head

The King and I dueled and he won as expected

I chastised him, challenging his title as false

I dared the King to remove his Jumpman sneakers, the source of his ability

“The only reason I taste defeat is because of your Jumpmans fore without I’d school thee!”

Hush rushed over the crowd fore no one had ever criticized the King as such

Their eyes transfixed on him now to see his response

Shit! He ordered his guards to apprehend me and at once I knew my plan had failed

That is when I lost all control of my filter

My tongue swung to and fro desperately until I hit a nerve

I had insulted the only thing sacred in his profane existence

His mother

The King slowly slipped out of his sneakers and advanced towards center line

With a flick of his wrist he ordered my captures to release me

With a wave of the finger he motioned for me to come

I obeyed

Now twas the King and I

Standing head to pelvis

The King forcefully checks me the ball

I had no more use for my tongue

Ability now would be my only saving grace

Unfortunately I had not enough to win this dual even with the King desoled

So I did what any man in my position would do

I cheated

I kicked the King as hard as I could right in his Lordship’s jewels

Followed with a basketball to his face

I scrambled to the Jumpmans

The guards doeth their best to stop me but to no avail

All it took was one single hop

I soared over thy cage

Off a street lamp

Through thy atmosphere

 Nothing but freedom

Months had passed now since the conquest of Sandal isle.

Her father wouldn’t rot in a cell a day longer

She would make sure of that

PIU Prodiction Dairy: Day 6: Jonin Nice Concept Art

It’s been a few days since I last updated the production diary. Knew this day would come but didn’t think it would be so soon. In any case, here are some earlier concept sketches of the Pump It Up alumni. Don’t become attached to them as they will all most likely change. mainly because I suck at drawing.

The design of Jonin Nice is influenced  by Sean from Street Fighter 3, Skates from Streets of Rage 2and a dash of DJ from the beat em up arcade game DJ Boy. Jonin’s a city kid so he’s very opportunistic and excels at using his environment to the best of his abilities. Hence his crowbar which he wields like a sword.  I wanted his name to reflect his cultural upbringings so I chose to use the word jonin which is a type of game played in playgrounds all across America. You might also know it by “the dozens.” basically, “the dozens” or “jonin” is  where two combatants face of head to head and engage in verbal combat. Such topics may include attractiveness, personal finances, and mothers. The game ends when your opponent fails to offer a comeback in a timely manner thus resulting in a KO or whenever the first fist is thrown.

PIU: Production Diary: Day 3

 Kotaian History 101

Today I’ll give some back story to the original inhabitants of Sandle island, thus being the Arrowatt. The Arrowatt tribe began far away on a distant land to the East. Facing a food drought, the Arrowattians made a mass migration West until they landed on present day Achi. Naming the two keys after their twin thunder gods Ahayuta and Achi, the Arrowatt continued to explore the area until they also discovered the mainland which they named Chacopa, the creator god and father of Ahayuta and Achi.

The Arrowatt settled throughout the islands. As the generations passed, food and land became scarce. The Arrowatt forgot their common ancestry and began to feud with each other. These were barbaric times. With hundreds of tribes all throughout Sandle Isle, danger lurked everywhere. Wanting to end the constant tribal wars, Tainotoa, Chief of the Tainoten went on a vast military campaign with dreams of unifying the Islands. Armed with superior weapons from the south he did just that and in 1910 Sandal Island was unified under the new tribal name of Kota.

PIU: Production Diary: Day 2

Today I decided to give a brief overview of Sandal Isle, you know, the destination where the story takes place. Sandal Isle looks much like it’s name, a sandal. It’s mainland (Chacopa) is shaped like a foot while it’s two keys (Ahayuta & Achi) are north of the mainland acting as the separated toes that a foot would look like if it were wearing a sandal. Between the keys and the mainland is the Isthmus of Tainotoa. Named after the the Kotoaian Chief who unified the island in 1910.

This map takes place after T.O.W.E.R Corps takeover of the island. In it the Sneaker Tykes have carved the keys of Ahayuta and Achi  into six different sectors.

After T.O.W.E.R occupation

PIU: Production Diary: Day 1

About a year ago I began production on an animated series I call Pump It Up! In a nutshell, PIU is about a scientist named Prof. Loafer who has created 6 super sneakers to better mankind. Prof. Loafer’s financial backer, Dr. Heel, betrays him by stealing the shoes, giving them to 6 of his top athletes working under the T.O.W.E.R. corporation, and kidnapping the the Professor for good measure. All was not lost however as the Professor’s daughter Penelope discovered the secret 7th pair of shoes her father designed. Tying the laces extra tight she sets off to rescue her father and save her island from the nefarious Dr. Heel.

With the production bible nearing it’s completion, I have one year left to make sure it’s in a presentable format for the next Pitch Conference which will be held in a years time in Florida. So as you see, the race is on. Each day I will post something new about PIU rather it be sketches,  scripts, or interviews from the team. Stay tuned and stay pumped.
